The festivities, which commenced on September 8th, the birthday of Mother Mary, have brought a sense of joy and togetherness to the city. The Mother Mary Fest is a special occasion that follows a period of Novena, during which devotees fervently seek Mother Mary’s intercession in their prayers. This spiritual journey culminates in an eight-day celebration that begins on the first Sunday after Mother Mary’s birthday. For most churches in the city, the Novena starts on August 30th and reaches its pinnacle on September 8th. Among these, the Basilica of Mount Mary in Bandra stands out as a significant hub of celebration.
Mount Mary’s Unique Celebrations:
At the Basilica of Mount Mary, the celebrations extend over eight days, attracting a large number of attendees from all walks of life. Both morning and evening masses are scheduled for the convenience of the faithful. Notably, to accommodate those who cannot physically visit Mount Mary, the church has set up a YouTube link on its website, allowing remote participation in the festivities.
A Marketplace of Faith and Community:
One of the distinctive aspects of the Mount Mary Fest is the vibrant marketplace that emerges around the church. Stalls offering a diverse range of items, both religious and secular, line the steps leading to the church and the surrounding roads. Devotees flock to purchase wax body parts, figurines of babies, homes, cars, and even planes, symbolizing their hopes and aspirations. In addition to these religious offerings, the festival also showcases traditional East-Indian delicacies, food items, sweets, pickles, and more. Enhanced Transportation for Devotees:
Recognizing the significant influx of devotees during this period, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has stepped in to provide additional transportation options. A fleet of 287 extra buses will be operated throughout the week to ensure that everyone can easily access the festivities and return home safely.
A Secure Celebration:
The safety and security of all participants remain a top priority. Given the expected large crowds, multiple measures have been put in place. To facilitate crowd management, three to four entry points have been established, along with the installation of a sizable shamiana (covering) for devotees to gather under. To minimize potential risks, fire-resistant frames have been employed instead of bamboo, and well-insulated electrical fittings are in use.
Watchful Eyes and Cautions:
To further enhance security, a network of 75 CCTV cameras will monitor the area, complemented by security personnel and police officers who will assist with crowd control. Fr. Sunder Albuquerque, vice rector of the Basilica of Mount Mary, has issued a cautionary note to devotees, urging them to avoid carrying backpacks to expedite security checks and to be mindful of pickpockets.
