About Mumbai Metro:
Mumbai commenced its first metro train in June 2014 and became operational for use for the people of Mumbai. The Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit system currently being served by Mumbai Metro Line 1, Metro Line 7 & Metro Line 2A.
Currently, only three metro lines are fully operational, and ten lines are under construction.
Mumbai has seen a sharp rise in its population in the last few decades. It is one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the country and the seventh most populous city in the world. The approx population is estimated at around 23 million, making it one of the world’s most populous cities.
According to the CTS study for MMR conducted in 2008, the modal share trip taken by people of Mumbai on public transport is 88% accounting for 52% on the local train, 26% on Bus Transport, 8% on Rickshaws and 2% on Taxi Transportation. As per the study, the population is estimated to grow by 34 million by the end of 2031, growing at a rate of 2% per annum.
The existing Mass Transit system of Mumbai is sustained by Mumbai Suburban Railway (Local Train) and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses that are mostly overcrowded and congested. The existing mass transit system has not been able to keep pace with the growing demand for public transportation needed by the people of Mumbai.
Therefore, there was a need to evaluate and introduce a new mass transit system that would strengthen the existing public transit system and provide a better transportation system for the people of Mumbai.
Below is the timeline that shows us how Mumbai Metro is emerging to become our second lifeline of the public transit system.
