Mumbai Metro – All Lines: Stations, Fare, Route Map, Status, & Timeline

Mumbai’s metro system is truly a game-changer for the city’s commuters. The first line-Metro Line 7, operated by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), has been a lifeline for the people of Mumbai, connecting them to key areas of the city and alleviating traffic congestion.

With many metro lines and their extensions in the works, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is leaving no stone unturned in expanding the metro network. The underground Line 3, being built by the Mumbai Metro Railway Corporation Limited (MMRCL), is a testament to the city’s commitment to modernizing its public transportation system.

It’s heartening to see the MMRDA’s recent decision to connect Mumbai and Virar with a new metro line, which will further enhance connectivity in the region.

Mumbai Metro current Operational Lines:

Mumbai commenced its first metro train in June 2014 and became operational for use for the people of Mumbai. The Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit system currently being served by Mumbai Metro Line 1, Metro Line 7 & Metro Line 2A.

Currently, only three metro lines are fully operational, and ten lines are under construction.

Why Mumbai need Metro Lines?

Mumbai has seen a sharp rise in its population in the last few decades. It is one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the country and the seventh most populous city in the world. The approx population is estimated at around 23 million, making it one of the world’s most populous cities.

According to the CTS study for MMR conducted in 2008, the modal share trip taken by people of Mumbai on public transport is 88% accounting for 52% on the local train, 26% on Bus Transport, 8% on Rickshaws and 2% on Taxi Transportation. As per the study, the population is estimated to grow by 34 million by the end of 2031, growing at a rate of 2% per annum.

The existing Mass Transit system of Mumbai is sustained by Mumbai Suburban Railway (Local Train) and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses that are mostly overcrowded and congested. The existing mass transit system has not been able to keep pace with the growing demand for public transportation needed by the people of Mumbai.

Therefore, there was a need to evaluate and introduce a new mass transit system that would strengthen the existing public transit system and provide a better transportation system for the people of Mumbai.

With a total investment of ₹82,172 crore, the expansion of Mumbai’s metro system is a massive undertaking, but it’s a necessary step in the city’s journey toward becoming a more sustainable, efficient, and modern metropolis.

The Mumbai Metro system is a shining example of what’s possible when public and private entities work together towards a common goal.

Undoubtedly, the Mumbai Metro will soon emerge as the second lifeline of Mumbai public transit system.
