Project History and Other Details
More About Metro Line 9 Project
Metro Line 9 is unique from all other metro lines in Mumbai because this line will have a double-decker bridge. The first deck will have an elevated flyover, and the metro train will run in the second deck.
The plan to construct a double-decker was required since Kashimira width is only 45m, and if a metro corridor has to be built, it will lead to congestion on the road. The flyover bridge will start from Shivaji Statue to Golden Nest Junction, covering 3.5km in length. A Double-decker bridge will be the first in Mumbai metropolitan region.
Metro line 9 also makes it unique because it will be the biggest metro depot in Mumbai. The Maintenance depot will be used for the entire Red Line Metro Corridor, i.e. Metro Lines 7, 7A and 9. A maintenance depot has been planned to be constructed at Mira-Bhayandar near Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium (Bhayander West) with a total land area of 20.0 Ha.
Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Red Line) shall provide interconnectivity with Metro Line 7 (Red Line), Metro Line 2A (Yellow Line), Mumbai Metro Line 10 (Green Line) and Western Express Highway. Commuters travelling from Mira-Bhayander will be able to travel on different metro routes. After successfully implementing the metro lines 7, 7A and 9 projects, commuters will be able to travel to Terminal 2 International Airport very conveniently and much faster than current transportation options.
Planning and Construction Phase:
In February 2017, MMRDA announced that DMRC started preparing the detailed project report (DPR), an extension of Mumbai Metro 7 till Mira-Bhayander.
In September 2018, the Maharashtra government approved the extension plan and identified the implementation project as Metro Line 9. MMRDA awarded the contract to J Kumar for Metro 7A and Metro 9.
In December 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for Metro 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) and Metro 9 (Dahisar-Mira Bhayander) along with Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
In September 2019, the work on the much-awaited Metro-9 project finally commenced. The estimated cost for the extension for Metro lines 7A and 9 is ₹6518 Crore.
The Metro Line – 9 (Red Line) route covers 10 stations in which 2 stations are planned as branch stations that will be operated as shuttle operations between DEEPAK HOSPITAL, MBMC SPORTS COMPLEX, and INDIRALOK.
