History of Gorai
Gorai is a Dharavi Bhet village bordered by Manori, Uttan, Pali, Chowk, Dongri, Tarodi, Rai, Morva and Murdhe. The East Indian community predominantly inhabits these villages, along with Koli fishing families. East Indians are native Christians of Mumbai and are considered to be the original and first Christian residents of Mumbai.
Who are East Indians?
In the 16th century, when Portugal took over the region from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, missionaries converted many locals to Roman Catholicism. After Portugal handed over Bombay to the British in 1661 (it passed to the East India Company in 1668), the Company began recruiting Christians from other parts of the Konkan and Mangalore. To differentiate themselves from these migrants, the local Christians began to call themselves the Original East Indians.

Things to do at Gorai Beach
- Watch the sunset. I suggest you visit this beach in the evening because you cannot miss the mesmerising view of the sunset from here.
- Water sports. Gorai Beach is known for water sports and beach parties. You may find rides like boat trips, jet skis and banana boats. However, water sports are not available during the monsoon, so avoid visiting then if you want to enjoy them.
- Horse rides. There are also many horse rides and horse carts (ghoda gadi) available on the beach, and you can enjoy a ride along the shore.
- Resort and cottage stays. Gorai Beach has several resorts, cottages and homestays where you can stay overnight, many of them very close to the beach.
- Night parties. Many resorts arrange parties during festivals and on New Year’s Eve, with music and food. Book early and plan your transport back.
- Enjoy the ferry ride. The short crossing of Gorai Creek, with fishing boats and mangroves on both sides, is a highlight in itself.
- Explore the villages. Walk around Gorai and nearby Manori and Uttan to see old churches, crosses and East Indian homes.
- Combine with EsselWorld or the Pagoda. Both are close by and make Gorai a full day out.

Can you drive on Gorai Beach?
In the past, Gorai was one of the few Mumbai beaches where people drove cars and bikes on the sand. That is no longer allowed. In September 2025 a minibus got stuck in the sand at high tide, and the BMC put up barricades at the entrances to stop vehicles driving onto the beach. Park outside and walk in.
Food at Gorai Beach
Enjoying the beach is incomplete without the delicious, mouth-watering food sold by hawkers and nearby food stalls. You may find chana masala, bhel puri, pani puri, baraf gola, vada pav and samosa, and in the monsoon, stalls selling roasted corn (bhutta).
For seafood lovers, Gorai is a treat. The fish served here is fresh, and the beach shacks and resort restaurants serve Koli and East Indian-style seafood such as fried bombil, surmai and prawn curry.
