To reduce traffic in the area, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced plans to build a new flyover parallel to the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan subterranean Metro Line 5.
The CM also announced plans to expand Metro Line 5 from Kalyan to Ulhasnagar and then to Chikhloli near Ambernath, which will significantly improve connectivity and public transit. The expansion intends to give the quickly expanding populations in these strategic areas of Thane district a faster and more effective connection.
A statement from the Thane district government claims that Bhiwandi’s total growth would be greatly accelerated by the simultaneous construction of Metro Line 5 and future flyover and road expansion projects. The CM called for the Project to be started right away in order to satisfy public demand and underlined the importance of the road expansion in conjunction with the metro development.
“The Kalyan-Bhiwandi Metro Line project is being executed to meet the growing transport needs of Bhiwandi’s expanding population and its vibrant freight logistics sector. The metro, in tandem with upgraded roads and the new flyover, is expected to greatly alleviate traffic snarls and provide smooth, reliable public transport,” the release said.
Furthermore, the long-awaited Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension’s final phase is scheduled to be opened in July.A 90-degree cable-stayed arm spanning the Western Express Highway (WEH), is almost finished and construction is moving quickly. With this link operational, there will not be any need to detour via the Vakola and hans Bhugra Marg which gives the Mumbai a smooth east-west route.
“In view of the growing population and persistent traffic congestion from goods transport, it was decided to implement an independent project featuring an underground metro, road widening, and new flyovers — offering a lasting traffic solution and driving urban and industrial growth. Both metro and road widening projects will progress in parallel, ensuring faster, safer, and seamless connectivity. These coordinated efforts aim to ease traffic and boost regional development,” Fadnavis stated in his post.
“Through MMRDA’s Metro Line-5, lakhs of citizens in Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar will soon access modern, efficient public transport. A proposed extension to Ulhasnagar and Chikhloli near Ambernath is under active study to enhance regional connectivity. Recognising Bhiwandi’s growing importance as a freight hub, it was ensured that financial constraints won’t hinder progress. It was also directed to incorporate suggestions from local public representatives, making the project inclusive and people-focused,” Fadnavis added.
In the end, the commitment to merging the Flyover and Road Expansion Projects with Metro Expansion is a very progressive approach to urban planning in rapidly evolving Indian cities. It highlights a thorough plan to handle the challenges of Urban expansion while also making sure that while business prospers and environmental impact is kept to a minimum as well as the advantages of advancement are shared very fairly by all residents. Maharashtra’s commitment to creating resilient, intelligent and sustainable Urban Ecosystems for the future are embodied in this comprehensive plan for Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan.
