Bridging the Gap: Mumbai's Trans-Harbour Link to Pune Expressway

In a bid to ease severe traffic congestion in Mumbai and significantly shorten travel times between two major cities, the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) is set to merge seamlessly with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The construction contract for this ambitious project has been awarded to Gawar Constructions, with a substantial budget of Rs 1,000 crore.

Path to Progress

Tenders for this groundbreaking project were issued in March 2023, marking a significant milestone toward realizing the dream of a smooth and uninterrupted connection. The proposed elevated corridor will have a crucial interchange at Chile, strategically located near Uran and Ulwe, on the outskirts of Navi Mumbai.

Time-Saving Commute

Commuters across the region can rejoice as this new corridor promises to provide a direct and hassle-free route from the bustling South Mumbai district of Worli all the way to Pune. By bypassing traffic bottlenecks, it has the potential to save travelers over an hour in their journey time. Furthermore, this development is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the picturesque hill stations of Lonavala, Khandala, and Mumbai by a remarkable 90 minutes, effectively addressing the long-standing bottleneck issue in Navi Mumbai.

Glimpse of the Future

The MTHL project commences at Messant Road in Swri, where it seamlessly connects with the Eastern Freeway, ultimately culminating at Shivaji Nagar in Navi Mumbai. This game-changing infrastructure initiative aims to offer an uninterrupted and swift 20-minut journey between these key locations, free from the hassles of traffic signals.

In a significant leap towards the project’s realization, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken a bold step by inviting global tenders from experienced firms to manage the operation and maintenance of this mega infrastructure project. This love brings us one step closer to the eagerly awaited opening of the link.

In addition to its integration with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the MTHL promises to significantly enhance access to crucial transportation arteries such as the Mumbai-Goa highway, the Navi Mumbai International Airport, and the JNPT port.

Bridge of Promise

Fondly known as the Sewri Nhava Sheva Harbour Link, the MTHL spans an impressive 22 kilometers in total length. Six lanes of this remarkable bridge, encompassing a vast 16.5 kilometers, will soar majestically over the sea, while an additional 5.5 kilometers of viaduct on the land on both sides will connect commuters to their destinations.

With these exciting developments in motion, Mumbai’s persistent traffic issues are on the brink of being resolved, ushering in a brighter and more accessible future for the city and its neighboring regions.
