Mumbai is about to get a big railway upgrade! In an effort to streamline daily commutation for the lakhs of people who travel using the Mumbai-dependent railway system, Indian Railways has announced a massive ₹16,241 crore project that will encompass new rail lines, improved connectivity, and more air-conditioned (AC) local trains.
With this announcement, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the benefits of reducing congestion, increasing the number of trains, and streamlining the suburban railway system in Mumbai to provide faster and safer service.
What’s Planned in the Project?

238 More AC Local Trains to Come
If that is not enough good news! They are also bringing in 238 AC local trains (with automatic doors), which will help alleviate crowding in the train system, especially at peak times.
Why This is Good News
There are millions of people who travel by train in Mumbai on a daily basis. Compared to travelling on a 4-wheeler, with some exceptions, the trains are crowded and slow. These developments will enhance the train system, making it even stronger, faster, and more convenient. The more rail lines there are, the more trains there are. The more trains there are, the less waiting and rushing there will be. The AC locals will offer people a larger degree of comfort while they travel.
This progress is an indication that Indian Railways is committed to the betterment and modernization of Mumbai’s lifeline, the Mumbai local train system.
