A technical fault on Mumbai Metro Line 1 caused massive delays during the morning rush hour on Monday, leading to overcrowded platforms and panic among commuters. The disruption triggered a chaotic scene that many described as a โstampede-likeโ situation, with videos circulating on social media capturing the extent of the disorder.
The issue occurred on the Ghatkopar-Versova route, a critical link connecting the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai. Due to the glitch, metro trains were reportedly running at longer intervals, causing passenger buildup at multiple stations, particularly at Ghatkopar, Andheri, and Western Express Highway stations.
Commuters Share Frustrations Online
As train services slowed, frustrated passengers turned to X (formerly Twitter) to express concern and demand answers. Many users shared clips showing dangerously packed platforms, with little room to move. Some passengers were seen climbing over railings and attempting to exit stations in panic, raising questions about emergency crowd management protocols.
One commuter posted, โIt felt like we were suffocating โ there was no space to even breathe. People were shouting, and kids were crying. Where is the safety?โ
Metro Authorities Respond
Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), the operator of Line 1, confirmed the delay was due to a technical snag that occurred early in the day. While services were later restored, the peak-hour disruption left thousands affected.
In a brief statement, MMOPL said, โDue to a minor technical issue, train services were impacted for a short duration. Our team acted promptly to resolve the problem and restore regular service.โ
However, the incident has once again sparked conversations around the urgent need to upgrade infrastructure and add more coaches to manage growing passenger volumes.
Renewed Demand for Six-Coach Trains
This is not the first time Mumbaiโs metro system has come under scrutiny. Daily commuters and urban planners have long been calling for an increase in train capacity. Currently, Line 1 operates with four-coach trains, which are proving inadequate during peak times.
Urban transport experts argue that the cityโs rapid population growth and increasing dependence on metro travel require immediate expansion of coach capacity and improved crowd control systems.
