A recent incident at Borivali Metro Station in Mumbai, where glass panels tumbled onto a parked auto-rickshaw, has sparked concerns about passenger safety and the quality of construction on the newly built Metro 2A line.

Glass Panel Mishap at Borivali Metro Station:

On a seemingly ordinary day, glass panels detached from the Mandapeshwar Metro Station’s structure in Borivali, crashing onto an auto-rickshaw parked beneath. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but this incident raised red flags regarding the construction standards of the newly established Metro 2A line.

MMRDA’s Swift Response:

The MMRDA didn’t waste time in addressing the situation. They immediately initiated the removal of similar glass panels from their stations. Three out of the 17 metro stations were found to have these panels, and they will be replaced with safer alternatives, all at the expense of the contractors, as confirmed by an MMRDA official.

While the MMRDA acted swiftly, they also pointed fingers at the auto-rickshaw driver, citing illegal parking as a contributing factor to the incident. Concurrently, they have commenced a comprehensive structural audit of all stations with similar panel arrangements to ensure passenger safety and station integrity.

Past Incidents Raise Concerns:

This incident is not the first of its kind. In 2019, Western Railway made a decision to remove glass panels from Churchgate station after a similar occurrence. The recent episode at Mandapeshwar Metro station has intensified concerns about the durability and safety of these glass panels.

MMRDA Launches Investigation:

Responding to the Borivali incident, the MMRDA has launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the glass panel collapse. They have made it clear that if anyone is found responsible, appropriate actions will be taken.

Activists and Commuters Express Concern:

However, skepticism prevails among activists and commuters regarding the construction standards at metro stations. Zoru Bhathena, an activist, asserts that the agency responsible should take accountability for the incident and implement preventive measures.

Importance of Safety Audits Emphasized:

Transport activist Mohammed Afzal underscores the necessity of safety audits for all metro stations to safeguard public well-being. He emphasizes that safety compliance certification is a mandatory prerequisite before any metro line is commissioned, stressing the importance of proactive prevention of such incidents.

The safety incident at Borivali Metro Station has raised critical questions about construction quality and safety standards. The MMRDA’s quick response, including the removal of unsafe panels and a comprehensive investigation, aims to reassure passengers of their commitment to safety. Yet, public concerns and calls for rigorous safety audits persist, highlighting the need for continued vigilance in ensuring passenger well-being on Mumbai’s growing metro network.
