Mumbai, a city known for its rich history, is bidding farewell to another iconic structure. The 130-year-old Bellasis Road Over Bridge (ROB) is set to be demolished. This bridge has been an integral part of South Mumbai, connecting Tardeo, Byculla, Nagpada, Grant Road, and the surrounding suburbs.
The primary reason behind this decision is safety. Experts have declared the existing bridge unsafe for use. To ensure the safety of commuters, a new bridge will replace the old one. A subcontractor has already been chosen for this significant project.
Western Railway Takes Charge
Western Railway (WR) is spearheading this ambitious endeavor. They plan to finalize a comprehensive demolition plan by September 15. The process of soliciting bids for this crucial task has already begun. The actual demolition is expected to start within the next two to three months.
More Than Just Demolition
However, it’s not just about tearing down the bridge. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also needs to remove the approach roads leading to the bridge. Until this is done, progress will be on hold. Reports suggest that BMC might not approve the final plan until November.
Key Details
The Bellasis ROB is 56 meters long and 28 meters wide. Demolishing it is estimated to cost INR 36 crore, with about INR 24 crore allocated for the civil and engineering work. Constructing the new bridge is projected to take anywhere from 18 to 24 months, with a cost ranging from INR 60 to 70 crore.
This bridge is a lifeline for many, with 25, 000 to 30, 000 vehicles crossing it daily. The demolition and subsequent construction are likely to affect the daily commute of people in the area.
A Change in Plans
Interestingly, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited initially planned to build a cable-stayed ROB on Bellasis Road, with a budget of INR 150 crore. However, this plan has been altered.
