The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken a significant step towards sustainable energy by setting up a solar power plant atop Asia’s largest sewage pumping station at Mahim causeway. This project is aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the pumping station, which has been a significant source of pollution.
Powering Up with Solar Energy
The newly installed 230 kW solar power plant generates more than 30,000 units of power every month, resulting in significant savings of Rs 2.40 lakh for the BMC. The cost of setting up the plant was Rs 1.5 crore, and it has a lifespan of 25 years. The expenses incurred in setting up the solar power plant will be recovered in the next six years.
Environmental Benefits
The solar power plant is expected to help the BMC reduce more than 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 25 years. According to the BMC, this environmental impact is equal to planting 11,000 trees. This project is a significant step towards achieving the city’s sustainability goals and reducing its dependence on non-renewable sources of energy.
Asia’s Largest Sewage Pumping Station
The Mahim Causeway-based solid waste pumping station is the largest in Asia and was built in 2003. The facility has eight pumps and is responsible for pumping sewage from the city and its western and eastern suburbs. With the installation of the solar power plant, the BMC has taken a significant step towards making the pumping station more sustainable and eco-friendly.
Tweet Announcement
The BMC has recently commissioned a 230 KW rooftop solar power system at the Bandra Influent Pumping Station. The solar power plant has a lifespan of 25 years and is estimated to reduce over 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during this period. The solar panels generate about 30,000 units of electricity per month, leading to savings of approximately Rs. 2.4 lakhs. In March 2023, the solar power system produced around 31,200 units of electricity, and in April 2023, it generated 31,482 units of electricity. This tweet highlights the impressive performance of the solar power plant installed at the sewage pumping station and its contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of the city.
The installation of the solar power plant atop Asia’s largest sewage pumping station at Mahim causeway is a significant achievement for the BMC. The project will not only help the civic body save money but also contribute towards reducing the carbon footprint of the city. This project is an excellent example of how cities can move towards sustainable energy sources while ensuring the efficient functioning of critical infrastructure.
