About Juhu Beach Mumbai
Juhu Beach runs along the western edge of Juhu, one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Mumbai. The sand is wide and flat, the sea is in front of you as far as you can see, and the sunset over the Arabian Sea is the main event of every evening. On weekends the beach is packed with families, couples, college groups and tourists; on weekday mornings it belongs to walkers, joggers and yoga groups.
The area behind the beach is home to many Bollywood stars, which is why Juhu is often called the “Beverly Hills of Bollywood”. Film and advertising shoots on the sand are a common sight. For most visitors, though, Juhu is simply the classic Mumbai beach outing: a walk on the sand, a dip of the feet in the waves, and a plate of pav bhaji at Juhu Chowpatty.
Juhu is the longest and best-known of Mumbai’s city beaches. Further north are Versova Beach, Aksa Beach and Gorai Beach; in south Mumbai, Girgaon Chowpatty sits at the end of Marine Drive. See all beaches in Mumbai.

Juhu Beach history
Juhu was once a separate strip of land. In the 19th century it was a long, narrow sand bar just off Salsette island, reachable on foot at low tide and home mainly to Koli fishing families, whose village, Juhu Koliwada, still exists at the southern end of the beach. The Portuguese called the place “Juvem”.

Juhu is a long, narrow sand bar off Salsette island, reachable at low tide and home to Koli fishing families. The Church of St Joseph is built here in 1853.
- 1890sA seaside resort idea
Jamsetji Tata buys land at Juhu and plans a seaside resort, but the plan is dropped after his death in 1904.
- 1924Gandhi at Juhu

- 1970s onBollywood’s address
Film stars build homes here, and Juhu becomes known as Mumbai’s “Beverly Hills of Bollywood”. The beach becomes a favourite film location.
- TodayMumbai’s favourite beach
Juhu is one of the city’s busiest public spaces, famous for Juhu Chowpatty street food, sunsets and the Ganesh immersion festival.
Juhu also has a special place in Indian aviation. Juhu Aerodrome, next to the beach, was India’s first civil airport, and it was here that J.R.D. Tata landed the first airmail flight from Karachi in 1932, the flight that marked the beginning of what later became Air India. The aerodrome is still used by helicopters and small aircraft today.

Always wear the life jacket provided and avoid rides on crowded or windy days.
Juhu Chowpatty: what to eat at Juhu Beach
Juhu Chowpatty, also written Juhu Chaupati, is the cluster of food stalls near the main entrance at Gandhigram Road. The stalls are licensed and numbered, and most open from late afternoon until about 11 PM. These are the dishes to try:
- Pav bhaji โ the Juhu classic: spiced mashed vegetables cooked on a huge griddle with butter, served with soft buns.
- Bhel puri and sev puri โ tangy, crunchy chaat made fresh in front of you.
- Pani puri โ crisp puris filled with spiced water; choose a busy stall.
- Ice gola โ shaved ice soaked in syrups such as kala khatta, served on a stick or in a glass.
- Kulfi and falooda โ rich frozen desserts, perfect after a spicy plate.
- Roasted corn (bhutta) and raw mango โ sold from carts along the sand, with lime and chilli.
- Fresh coconut water โ the best drink on a hot afternoon.
