About Girgaon Chowpatty
Girgaon Chowpatty, often just called Chowpatty, is less a quiet beach and more Mumbai’s favourite open-air living room. Office workers stop by on the way home, families bring children to play on the sand, couples sit along the wall, and tourists come to see the famous view: the line of lights along Marine Drive, known as the Queen’s Necklace, curving away towards Nariman Point.
In the mornings the beach is calm, with walkers, joggers and yoga groups. From late afternoon, the numbered food stalls along the sand fire up, and by sunset the beach is full. The crowd is a cross-section of the city, which is exactly what makes Chowpatty special.
Chowpatty is part of a classic south Mumbai evening: walk along Marine Drive at sunset, end at Chowpatty for food, and then head up Malabar Hill for the view. For beaches in the western suburbs, see Juhu Beach and Versova Beach, or browse all beaches in Mumbai.

Girgaon Chowpatty history
Chowpatty has been part of Mumbai’s public life for well over a century: a place for leisure, for festivals and, during the freedom struggle, for protest.
- 1800sA sandy shore below Malabar Hill
As Bombay grew, the open beach at Girgaon became a favourite evening spot. The name Chowpatty is commonly linked to “chau-pati”, meaning four channels or creeks.
- 1832Wilson College
Wilson College is founded; its Gothic building later rises on Chowpatty Seaface, facing the beach.
- 1920Tilak’s last rites
Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak dies on 1 August 1920. Because of the huge crowds, his last rites are held on the sands of Girgaon Chowpatty. A statue of Tilak stands in the garden here.
- 1920sโ40sA stage for the freedom movement
Chowpatty becomes a favourite venue for mass public meetings and rallies during the struggle for independence.
- 2015“Swaraj Bhoomi”
The Maharashtra government decides to name the area Swaraj Bhoomi, in honour of Tilak and his call for self-rule.
- 2024The Coastal Road
The Mumbai Coastal Road opens, with India’s first undersea twin road tunnels running from near Girgaon Chowpatty under Malabar Hill.
Today the beach is also where the Coastal Road twin tunnels begin, running under Malabar Hill towards Priyadarshini Park and Worli. The tunnels have cut the drive from south Mumbai to Worli to a few minutes.

The food stalls on the beach are licensed and numbered, and most open from late afternoon until around midnight. These are the dishes Chowpatty is known for:

Ganesh visarjan at Girgaon Chowpatty
Girgaon Chowpatty is the most famous Ganesh immersion point in Mumbai. On Anant Chaturdashi, the last day of the ten-day Ganeshotsav, huge processions with drums, dancing and coloured powder wind through Girgaon and Charni Road to the beach. Large mandal idols, including the famous Lalbaugcha Raja, are carried into the sea on rafts. Immersions often continue through the night and into the next day, and can be delayed by high tide.
- Expect massive crowds, road closures and diversions across south Mumbai on visarjan days.
- Use the local train or metro; driving is not practical.
- Watch from a safe spot, follow police instructions and keep children close.
- Do not enter the water. Stingray and jellyfish stings have been reported during the immersion season.
Girgaon Chowpatty at night
Chowpatty is at its liveliest after dark. Once the sun sets, the Marine Drive street lights come on and form the glittering arc known as the Queen’s Necklace, best seen from the Chowpatty end of the bay. The food stalls are busiest from about 7 PM to 11 PM, families and friends fill the sand, and the sea breeze makes even summer nights pleasant.
- Best time for the night view: about 30 minutes after sunset, when the sky is still blue and the lights are on.
- The promenade and the area around the food stalls are well lit and busy until late; the far, dark ends of the sand are best avoided.
- Charni Road station is just across the road, and local trains run past midnight, so getting home is easy.
- Keep your belongings secure in the crowds, especially on weekend nights.
