People are primarily dependent on Mumbai Local trains for their daily traveling on the public transit system. Mumbai Local Train is also popularly called here as Mumbai LifeLine. It is said that Mumbai comes to a halt when Mumbai Lifeline stops from running. However, In June 2014 was a breakthrough for Mumbai when it got the first Metro running in the city, and now 14 more metro lines are on the way to be built. Mumbai Metro Lines

Mumbai commenced its first metro train in June 2014 and became operational for use for the people of Mumbai. The Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit system that is currently being served by Mumbai Metro Line 1. Currently, only one metro line is operational, and 14 others are under construction.

 

The approx population estimated at around 23 million, making it one of the world most populous cities. According to the CTS study for MMR conducted in 2008, the modal share trip taken by people of Mumbai on public transport is 88% accounting for 52% on the local train, 26% on Bus Transport, 8% on Rickshaws and 2% on Taxi Transportation. As per the study, the population is estimated to grow by 34 million by the end of 2031, growing at a rate of 2% per annum.

Mumbai Metro - Line 1 (Blue Line)

Mumbai Metro Line 1 is the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro corridor, the first rapid transit metro system in Mumbai. This metro corridor is 11.4 KM elevated and consists of 12 stations from Versova to Ghatkopar.  It was a breakthrough for Mumbai when it received its first Metro Rail Network. 

The overall cost estimated for the Mumbai Metro Line 1 is ₹4,321 crore (US$610 million), which is 84% more than the initially quoted amount of ₹ 2,356 crores as per the signed contract on March 2007.

Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Dahisar – D.N. Nagar) metro corridor is 18.589 KM fully elevated and consists of 17 stations from Dahisar to D.N. Nagar. The Metro Line 2A is a subsection of the Metro Line 2 Plan of the Dahisar-Bandra-Mankhurd line. After many changes in the corridor route stretch, MMRDA finally decided that Metro Line 2 will cover the Dahisar-Bandra-Mankhurd route. However, after detailed feasibility conducted by an agency on the construction of the metro line 2, MMRDA announced that the line would be build in two sections – Dahisar-DN Nagar (Metro 2A) and DN Nagar-Mankhurd (Metro 2B)

Mumbai Metro - Line 3 (Aqua Line)

Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) metro corridor is a 33.5 KM long line consist of 27 stations where 26 stations will be underground and 1 station at gradeThis line will be the first fully underground metro line in Mumbai connecting Cuffe Parade from the south end of the city to Kanjumarg in the north.

MMRDA granted autonomy of the line to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) to speed up the construction process and maintenance of the metro line. The Metro line 3 project is being implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL).

Mumbai Metro - Line 4 (Green Line)

Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Wadala – Kasarawadavali) metro corridor is 32.32 KM fully elevated and consists of 32 stations from Wadala to Kasarvadavali. The line will provide interconnectivity between Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Mono Rail, Metro Line 2B (D N Nagar to Mandale), and the proposed Metro Line 5 (Thane to Kalyan), Metro Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli) and Metro Line 11 (Wadala to CSMT). The Metro line 4 corridor project got approval from the Maharashtra cabinet on 27 September 2016. 

The foundation stone was laid on 24 December 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The MMRDA will construct metro car depots at Owala village in Thane district and another in Vikhroli. The entire Metro Line 4 project is being implemented by MMRDA.
