Mumbai, the bustling city known for its constant activity, is about to witness a significant upgrade in its transportation system. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is getting ready to begin construction on Metro Line-10, a project that promises to improve travel for residents and visitors alike. Covering a distance of 9.2 kilometers, this ambitious project aims to connect Metro-4 and Mira Road, making commuting in the city more accessible.

Two Levels of Travel

The standout feature of Metro Line-10 is its innovative double-decker design. Unlike traditional metro lines, this one will run above an elevated road planned between Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel, offering a distinctive travel experience.

Seamless Travel from Gaimukh to Mira Gaon

Starting its journey at Gaimukh, where it connects to Line 4A, Metro Line-10 will stretch for 9.20 kilometers before reaching Mira Gaon. This integration of metro lines aims to make travel across the city more straightforward.

Systra-DB Engineering

To bring this ambitious project to life, MMRDA has enlisted the help of the Systra-DB Engineering consortium as project consultants. Their expertise and dedication will play a crucial role in shaping Mumbai’s transportation future. Additionally, MMRDA is actively working on appointing a consultant to secure environmental clearance, a necessary step before construction can begin.

On the Fast Track: Construction Timetable

Expectations are high as the project moves closer to becoming a reality. Once environmental clearance is secured, the tendering process is set to begin later this year, with construction scheduled to start in 2024. The project aims to be completed within a mere 36 months, potentially allowing it to be operational by 2027.

Four-Kilometer Stretch

Approximately 4 kilometers of Metro Line-10 will run through an elevated section between Gaimukh and Hotel Fountain, positioned above National Highway-8. This elevation showcases Mumbai’s commitment to innovation and addresses the challenges of road expansion.

The decision to use a double-decker design stems from practical considerations. The limitations of widening the road at Ghodbunder led to this creative solution. The metro will be constructed above the elevated road, towering at a height of at least 20 meters from the ground, ensuring smooth traffic flow below.

Streamlined Approvals

To expedite the project, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has already secured some approvals for the elevated road. MMRDA is exploring the possibility of transferring these approvals to facilitate the construction of Metro Line-10, demonstrating effective coordination among different infrastructure projects.

One Depot for Multiple Lines

Efficiency is a key focus of Metro Line-10’s development. Officials have confirmed that there’s no need to build a separate depot for this metro line. The existing depot at Mogharpada, which currently serves Lines 4, 4A, and 11 (CSMT-Wadala), will be expanded to meet the needs of Metro Line-10, fostering collaboration and reducing costs.

As Mumbai prepares for the arrival of Metro Line-10, the city is set to take a significant step forward in public transportation. The project’s expected completion in 2027 will be a moment to celebrate as Mumbai continues to evolve into a global city with top-notch infrastructure.
