In a significant operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully thwarted a major gold smuggling racket in Mumbai. The operation resulted in the arrest of eight individuals and the seizure of a substantial amount of smuggled gold, cash, and foreign currency. Here’s a closer look at the key details:
- Gold Seized: 2.1kg of gold, believed to be smuggled into India.
- Cash Recovered: A staggering โน2.32 crore in cash, suspected to be the proceeds from the smuggled gold.
- Foreign Currency: USD100,000, equivalent to โน84.15 lakh.
The Arrested Individuals
The DRI has taken eight individuals into custody as part of this operation. Among them, three are Indian nationals, while the remaining four are Kenyans and one is a Tanzanian. Notably, all the foreign nationals arrested in connection with this case are women.
Key Locations Investigated
During the operation, the DRI conducted searches at various premises linked to the smuggling operation. In addition to the locations allegedly used for melting the smuggled gold, the agency also investigated the premises of a jeweler who was suspected of purchasing the illicit gold.
One crucial revelation from the investigation is that the owner and operator of the gold melting facility is a repeat offender. This individual is not only involved in this case but is also wanted in connection with other criminal cases.
Investigations have unveiled a network of individuals involved in this smuggling operation. African nationals reportedly collected the smuggled gold and handed it over to the owner-operator of the melting facility in Mumbai.
DRI maintained a strict round-the-clock vigil, eventually leading to the location of the African nationals involved in the operation. Searches were conducted at two hotels in South Mumbai, which served as transaction points. Subsequently, this operation resulted in the recovery of the smuggled gold and other incriminating evidence.
Nexus Exposed
The DRI’s investigation exposed a suspicious nexus between the African nationals and the owner of the melting facility. The diverted the smuggled gold to jewellers in exchange for cash in both foreign and Indian currencies.
This operation is being hailed as a significant bust of a smuggling syndicate that primarily involved African nationals as carriers. In a similar operation in April 2023, the DRI successfully dismantled a syndicate that had employed Sudanese nationals as carriers.
The successful operation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligent is a testament to their dedication to safeguarding the nation from illegal activities and upholding the law. This bust will undoubtedly have a far-reaching impact in curbing gold smuggling in the region.
