In an effort to make Thane’s roads safer and less crowded, the Thane police have taken a big decision. They will now stop heavy trucks, like big multi-axle vehicles, from the city between 5 in the morning and 11 in the night. This new rule starts from Wednesday and aims to give Thane’s residents and visitors a smoother and safer travel experience.
What Vehicles are Affected?
All big vehicles with eight wheels or more, including those with multiple axles, won’t be allowed inside Thane during the restricted hours (5am to 11pm). This rule applies to all the roads and areas within the city.
Enforcement Period and Locations
The restriction on heavy vehicle entry will be implemented for 18 hours each day. Starting from 5am in the morning until 11pm at night, the regulation will be enforced rigorously for the next 30 days. To ensure compliance, authorities will regulate vehicles at the entry points of major highways, including those at Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai, and other prominent locations.
Parking Arrangements
With the entry of heavy vehicles barred, local authorities have been instructed to make suitable arrangements for parking these vehicles during the restricted hours. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had earlier proposed the creation of parking bays along highway entry points as an alternative solution to accommodate these heavy vehicles during peak hours.
Highway Repair Works
To further enhance road infrastructure and avoid inconveniences during the enforcement period, relevant agencies have been directed to undertake repair and maintenance works on key highways. This includes critical routes such as the Mumbai-Nashik highway and Ghodbunder road, aiming to ensure smooth traffic flow and a safer commuting experience.
While the decision is expected to improve traffic conditions within Thane city, there are concerns that it may lead to an increase in traffic congestion in the neighboring cities. As heavy vehicles are rerouted to other areas, authorities will need to closely monitor the traffic situation in the regions surrounding Thane.
Escalation in Logistic Costs
Transporters and logistics companies have expressed their apprehensions regarding the new regulation. They believe that the restriction on heavy vehicles’ entry may result in higher logistical costs, as rerouting and managing transportation during the restricted hours can be challenging.
The Thane police’s decision to restrict the entry of heavy and multi-axle vehicles during specific hours is a commendable step towards easing traffic congestion and enhancing road safety. By providing suitable parking arrangements and undertaking highway repair works, the authorities aim to mitigate potential challenges during the enforcement period. However, close monitoring of traffic in neighboring cities and addressing concerns raised by transporters will be crucial to ensuring the overall success of this initiative.
