In a recent incident near Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), a local train appeared to go past a red signal, causing a delay in suburban train services. However, railway authorities have described it as a “signal failure. ” Let’s take a closer look at what happened and how it affected commuters.

What Happened:

On a Thursday afternoon, a suburban train bound for CSMT from Kalyan seemed to ignore a red signal at around 3:20 pm. Thankfully, the train’s motorman quickly realized the mistake and brought the train to a halt just a bit further down the tracks.

At the same time, another train was occupying platform number 4 at CSMT, and an AC local train was approaching platform number 3. This created a potentially dangerous situation, given the unexpected stoppage of the Kalyan-CSMT train.

Due to this incident, train services on the Central Railway’s main line experienced disruptions for about an hour. Commuters reported delays of approximately 10-15 minutes during the evening rush hour, affecting around 35 lakh people who rely on the Central Railway’s suburban corridors daily.

Official Statements:

The Central Railway spokesperson insisted that the train did not deliberately pass a red signal, which is officially termed as ‘signal passing at danger’ (SPAD). Instead, they attributed the disruption to a “signal failure. “

Resolution:

To restore normalcy, railway authorities replaced the motorman of the affected train and reversed its direction. After these measures were taken, train services resumed their usual schedules.

While the incident initially raised concerns among commuters and railway sources, it appears to have been a case of signal misinterpretation or failure. Thankfully, quick action by the motorman and railway authorities helped avert a more serious situation. Nonetheless, it serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the millions of people who rely on Mumbai’s suburban train network every day.
