Mumbai's Bhandup East-West Connector Gets Green Light from BMC

In a welcome development for the bustling city of Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has given its enthusiastic approval for the construction of a new bridge. This bridge will serve as a vital link connecting two important parts of Bhandup, making life easier for its residents. In this article, we will take you through the key details of this exciting project, which is set to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the area.

A Bridge to Connect Bhandup East and West:

Imagine being able to travel seamlessly between the eastern and western parts of Bhandup without the need for a lengthy detour. Well, that vision is about to become a reality! The BMC has given the green light for the construction of a bridge that will link Ganesh Mandir on Veer Savarkar Road in Bhandup East with the GKW Colony on Lal Bahadur Shastri Road in Bhandup West.

A Welcome Relief from Detours:

Currently, commuters and motorists traveling between the two sides of Bhandup face the hassle of navigating a four-kilometer-long detour. This involves crossing bridges over the railway tracks at the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), near the Kanjurmarg and Nahur railway stations. This detour can be time-consuming and frustrating, especially during peak hours.

Easing Congestion on Key Roads:

The proposed bridge not only promises to make life more convenient for Bhandup residents but also aims to de-congest two critical roadways: the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR). These roads have been witnessing a steady increase in traffic, leading to delays and inconvenience for commuters. With the new bridge in place, it’s expected that traffic flow on these routes will improve significantly.

Project Cost and Timeline:

The Bhandup East-West Connector project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 106 crore. This significant investment reflects the BMC’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in Mumbai. The project is expected to be completed within two-and-a-half years, bringing relief to the community sooner rather than later.

Selecting the Right Team:

To bring this ambitious project to fruition, the BMC initiated the tender process in January. After meticulous planning and careful consideration, a technical consultant prepared the design and cost estimates for this crucial infrastructure. Remarkably, the lowest bidder, RPS Infraproject Pvt Ltd, offered to undertake the project at a rate that is 12.5% below the estimated cost. This cost-efficient approach ensures that public funds are used wisely for the benefit of the community.

The Road Ahead:

With the recent approval by the civic administration, the project is now ready to move into the next phase. The official work order is expected to be issued shortly. It’s worth noting that the portion of the bridge that crosses over the railway tracks will be constructed under the watchful eye of railway authorities. The structure itself will be built using mild steel plate girders and will have a robust pile foundation. Additionally, the contractor will be responsible for ancillary works such as slip roads, drain covers, thermoplastic paint, and signage, ensuring a comprehensive and well-planned infrastructure upgrade.

The Bhandup East-West Connector is poised to be a game-changer for the residents of Bhandup and all those who traverse this area regularly. It represents an essential step in improving the city’s infrastructure, alleviating traffic woes, and enhancing the overall quality of life for Mumbaikars. As this exciting project unfolds, it promises to bring new opportunities and convenience to this vibrant part of the city.
