If you’re one of those drivers who can’t resist pushing the speed limit on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, brace yourself for a significant change. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is on the verge of completing a groundbreaking project aimed at enhancing road safety. By mid-October, 430 cutting-edge cameras will be operational at 106 key locations along the expressway, marking a remarkable step forward in the implementation of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).

The Vision of Safer Roads:

Sanjay Yadav, the Joint Managing Director of MSRDC, explained that the project is making headway with the installation of gantries along the expressway. The ultimate goal is to have a network of 430 state-of-the-art CCTV cameras at strategic locations by mid-October. These advanced cameras will be interconnected through optical fiber to a central control room. The ITMS is set to play a crucial role in recording a range of traffic violations, including overspeeding, reckless driving, wrong-way maneuvers, unauthorized halts, lane deviations, and driving against the designated flow of traffic, among others.

Project on the BOT Model:

It’s important to note that this project operates on the Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) model. To oversee the project and penalize offenders, MSRDC will enlist the services of officials from the transport and police departments. With an extensive network of high-tech CCTV cameras, including night vision capabilities, it will become increasingly difficult for drivers to exceed speed limits on the expressway.

Addressing a Spectrum of Violations:

The Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) in Mumbai will comprehensively address various traffic violations through this project. These violations encompass not just speeding, but also illegal stoppages, unauthorized entries, wrong-way driving, lane indiscipline, mobile phone use, neglecting seat belts, ignoring pedestrian crossings, vehicles without proper lighting, unauthorized fancy number plates, overloaded vehicles, and two-wheelers venturing into restricted areas.

A Multifaceted System:

The ITMS includes a multitude of features, such as spot and average speed detection systems, lane discipline violation detection systems, weigh-in-motion systems for commercial vehicles, automatic vehicle counters, automatic number plate recognition cameras, additional CCTV cameras for general surveillance, wrong-way entry detection, variable messaging signs, weather monitoring systems, mobile surveillance vans, and a vehicle tracking system.

Centralized Control for Enhanced Efficiency:

A centralized command and control center will be established in Lonavala, with additional viewing centers. All camera feeds will be accessible online for authorized personnel. The system will also feature citizen interaction and violation penalty collection through a mobile-responsive website, kiosks, variable message signs, and SMS notifications. Violation challans will be promptly generated and validated, with supporting evidence like photos and videos attached, ensuring transparency in the process.

The imminent deployment of 430 advanced cameras along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a significant step towards enhancing road safety. With a comprehensive system that addresses various traffic violations, this project not only aims to deter overspeeding but also to create a safer and more disciplined driving environment. As these cameras become operational, they represent the future of safer roads in the region.
