In a significant development, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has kicked off tunnelling work for Metro 7A, a new addition to Mumbai’s metro network. This expansion aims to connect Gundavali to the bustling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), offering a more accessible and congestion-free travel option.
First Tunnelling Machine in Action
On a recent Friday, the MMRDA, in collaboration with its civil contractor, commenced excavation work with the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), T62. This marks the beginning of an exciting project that will improve the city’s transportation infrastructure.
The initial tunnel drive is projected to conclude within a month, with the final phase to follow. The entire tunnel construction endeavor is scheduled for completion by May 2024. This underground journey ranges from depths of 28 meters to 12 meters below the ground, ensuring a smooth transition between underground and elevated metro sections.
Before tunneling could commence, an underground sewer line had to be redirected, showcasing the meticulous planning that precedes such endeavors.
A Path to Eased Traffic
Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, emphasized the positive impact of the Metro 7A route on reducing traffic congestion. He stated, “The commencement of tunneling work is a milestone towards a brighter and more accessible future. “
Metro 7A – Bridging Gaps
The Metro 7A corridor spans 3. 42 kilometers, including a twin tunnel stretch of 2. 49 kilometers. Its path alternates between elevated and parallel to the Western Express Highway and Sahar Elevated Road, featuring an elevated Airport Colony Metro Station near AAI Colony. This new line not only connects directly to CSMIA but also links to the Mira Bhayandar Metro 9 and the Western suburbs Metro 2A and 7.
Future Prospects
Metro 7A, currently under construction, is poised to play a vital role in connecting to the upcoming Metro 8 and the Navi Mumbai International Airport, further enhancing the city’s connectivity grid.
Underground Connectivity
Additionally, the CSMIA underground station of Metro 7A and the CSMIA underground station of Metro 3 are parallel and interconnected at the concourse level, promising seamless transfers for commuters.
This initiative underscores Mumbai’s commitment to improving its transportation system, ultimately enhancing the lives of its residents and visitors. As the project progresses, it paves the way for a more accessible, efficient, and less congested Mumbai.
