As the festive season approaches, there’s great news for travelers on the Mumbai-Goa highway. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been hard at work, and their efforts are paying off. The 42-kilometer stretch of the Mumbai-Goa highway from Panvel to Kasu in Raigad district is now open to traffic, just in time for Ganeshotsav. Let’s take a closer look at this remarkable development and the journey it took to get here.
A Smooth Ride to Konkan:
Ahead of the Ganeshotsav festivities, the NHAI has completed an impressive 84-kilometer section of the Mumbai-Goa highway, dividing it into two distinct packages: Panvel to Kasu (42 km) and Kasu to Indapur (42 km).
Panvel to Kasu: 38 km of this stretch has been meticulously concretized, ensuring a sturdy and durable road surface. The remaining 4 km primarily consist of a bridge and flyover, with ongoing curing processes to strengthen them. As a temporary measure, steel slags have been placed on these structures to facilitate vehicle movement.
Kasu to Indapur: In this package, an additional 10 km leading up to Nagothane in Raigad district has been transformed into a pothole-free driving experience. White topping and Cement Treatment Base (CTB) have been applied to make this part of the highway a smooth and efficient route. Commuters can now breeze through the Palaspe Junction in Panvel to Nagothane in under an hour.
Contractors at Work:
JM Mhatre Infra Pvt Ltd took up the task of Package 1 (Panvel to Kasu), with an estimated project cost of Rs 151 crore. Meanwhile, Kalyan Toll Infra was entrusted with Package 2 (Kasu to Indapur), starting their work in November 2022.
This journey, however, wasn’t without its share of challenges. Initially, Supreme Tollways Pvt Ltd was awarded the contract for the entire 84 km stretch from Panvel to Indapur in 2011, with a completion target set for 2014. Unfortunately, hurdles such as land acquisition and utility relocation delayed progress significantly. In 2014, these issues were finally resolved, but financial woes then plagued the company. Despite a financial aid injection of Rs 550 crore from NHAI, the contractor only managed to complete the construction of the 42 km stretch from Panvel to Kasu in Package 1. Package 2 saw just 20 km of bituminous road laid. In 2021, the NHAI terminated the contract due to these persistent delays.
The Road to Resolution:
The terminated contractor took the matter to the Bombay High Court and later to the Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn the termination. However, both courts ruled in favor of NHAI. Subsequently, in 2022, two new contractors were appointed to pick up the reins.
Looking Ahead:
The Mumbai-Goa highway, with a total design length of 460 km from Panvel to Indapur to Zarap-Patradevi, is a vital artery connecting these regions. While NHAI is responsible for the 84 km stretch between Panvel and Indapur, the rest falls under the jurisdiction of the state government-led National Highway Public Works Department (NH PWD).
As per an NH PWD official, the 355.28 km stretch from Indapur to Zarap has been divided into 10 packages, each catering to specific segments of this important roadway. With approximately 80 percent of the work already completed, travelers can anticipate a smoother and more efficient journey as the highway is expected to be fully ready by the end of the year.
The Mumbai-Goa highway is not just a road; it’s a lifeline for many who rely on it for their daily commute and for the seamless celebration of festivals like Ganeshotsav. The efforts of NHAI and NH PWD, although marred by challenges, are finally bearing fruit. With smoother roads and efficient connectivity on the horizon, travelers can look forward to safe and enjoyable journeys along this iconic route. Ganpati Bappa Morya!
