Mumbai Metro Line 7A (Red Line): Airport Route, Stations, Status & Opening Date

Mumbai metro 7

Part of our Mumbai Metro guide โ€” every line, fare, timing and status update in one place.

Mumbai Metro Line 7A (Red Line) is a short airport link that extends Line 7 from Gundavali in Andheri (East) to Terminal 2 of Mumbai airport (CSMIA). The 3.4 km line is partly elevated and partly underground, with two new stations. Its tunnels are complete, but the line is not yet open: the elevated section near Airport Colony is awaiting a final height clearance from the Airports Authority of India.

Gundavali is the existing southern terminus of Line 7. Line 7A adds the two new stations beyond it: about 0.9 km on a viaduct and about 2.5 km in twin tunnels under the airport area.

Current status (October 2026)

  • Tunnels: both tunnels between Andheri (East) and the airport are complete; the final breakthrough was on 14 July 2025.
  • Elevated section: by February 2026 the viaduct was complete, the ramp about 98% and Airport Colony station about 95%.
  • Height clearance: the viaduct, ramp and Airport Colony station are too tall for the height AAI allowed in the airport funnel zone, because the overhead power wires were not accounted for. Work on this stretch largely stopped from early 2025.
  • Latest: in October 2026, a survey by the airport operator found the extra 2.5 m would not obstruct flight paths. Formal AAI approval is awaited, and work has resumed at Airport Colony station.
  • Underground station: the T2 station was moved for technical reasons to a site near a nallah, which has made construction harder.

Timings & fare

ItemDetails
TimingsTo be announced. Expected to follow Red Line hours (Line 7 runs from about 5:50 AM to 11:00 PM).
FareTo be announced. Red Line fares are distance-based, starting at โ‚น10.
OperatorExpected to be MMMOCL (same as Line 2A, 7 and 9)

Line 7A is planned as a continuation of the Red Line, so trains are expected to run through from Line 7 rather than as a separate shuttle. MMRDA has not yet published a service plan.

Interchange stations

Gundavali

โ“‚ Line 7 ยท โ“‚ Line 1 nearby

The starting point, on the Western Express Highway in Andheri (East). Red Line trains from Dahisar and Mira Road (Line 9) will continue from here to the airport.

Airport Colony

An elevated station serving Vile Parle (East) and the Sahar side of the airport. It is built low because it sits in the flight approach zone.

CSMIA Terminal 2

โ“‚ Line 3 ยท Line 8 (proposed)

An underground station at the international terminal. Change here to Line 3 for BKC, Worli, Terminal 1 and Cuffe Parade. The proposed Line 8 would link it to Navi Mumbai Airport.

Getting to Terminal 2 by metro

Today (before Line 7A opens)

  1. From south Mumbai or BKC, take Line 3 straight to CSMIA T2
  2. From the western suburbs, take Line 7 to Gundavali
  3. Take a short auto or taxi ride to Terminal 2

After Line 7A opens

  1. Board a Red Line train on Line 7 or Line 9
  2. Stay on through Gundavali and Airport Colony
  3. Get off at CSMIA Terminal 2; change to Line 3 for BKC or Terminal 1

About Metro Line 7A

Route explained

Line 7A leaves Line 7 south of Gundavali, near the Western Express Highway in Andheri (East), and runs on a viaduct to Airport Colony in Vile Parle (East). It then ramps down into twin tunnels and continues underground to CSMIA Terminal 2 in Sahar, passing under the Sahar Elevated Road.

The line was first planned to end at Andheri. The airport extension was added in 2017, and in 2018 MMRDA decided to end it at the international terminal rather than continue to the domestic terminal.

Why part of the line is underground

Close to the runway, structures must stay below strict height limits. Running underground near the terminal avoids those limits and lets the line reach T2 directly, alongside the Line 3 station.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mumbai Metro Line 7A open?

No. Line 7A is still under construction. Its twin tunnels to the airport were completed in July 2025, but the elevated stretch near Airport Colony is waiting for a final height clearance from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). No opening date has been announced.

Where does Metro Line 7A run?

It extends the Red Line (Line 7) from Gundavali in Andheri (East) to Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), via Airport Colony in Vile Parle (East).

How many stations does Line 7A have?

Two new stations: Airport Colony (elevated) and CSMIA Terminal 2 (underground). The line starts from the existing Gundavali station on Line 7.

Will Line 7A connect with Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line)?

Yes. Its underground terminus at CSMIA T2 is planned as an interchange with Line 3, which already serves the airport and runs to BKC, Worli and Cuffe Parade. The proposed Line 8 (Gold Line) to Navi Mumbai Airport is also planned to meet here.

Can I go from Dahisar or Mira Road to the airport by metro?

Once Line 7A opens, the Red Line will run from Mira Road (Line 9) through Dahisar and Andheri (East) to Terminal 2. MMRDA says Mira-Bhayandar commuters will then be able to reach BKC with one change, at the airport station.

Why is Line 7A delayed?

The airport section lies in the flight approach (funnel) zone, where structures must stay below set heights. The elevated viaduct, ramp and Airport Colony station were designed without enough room for the overhead power wires, so they exceed the height AAI allowed. Work on that stretch largely stopped from early 2025. In October 2026, an airport survey found the extra height would not affect flight paths, and AAI’s formal approval is awaited.

Does Line 7A go to Terminal 1 (domestic)?

No. Line 7A ends at Terminal 2 in Sahar. For Terminal 1 at Santacruz, change at CSMIA T2 to Line 3, which has a separate CSMIA T1 station.

How much does Line 7A cost?

The project is estimated at about โ‚น812 crore. J. Kumar Infraprojects is the civil contractor. Rebuilding the airport viaduct, if it were needed, could add about โ‚น250 crore.

Who is building and operating Line 7A?

MMRDA is building the line. Like the rest of the Red Line, it is expected to be run by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation (MMMOCL).
