Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) will link Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, starting from Kapurbawdi on Line 4. Phase 1, a 7-station elevated stretch from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi, is about 95% complete and is targeted to open around December 2026. A revised plan approved in August 2026 extends the network to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar (Line 5A) by about 2030–31.

Phase 2 station names follow the revised alignment approved in August 2026 and may change before construction.

Current status (October 2026)

• Phase 1: civil work on Kapurbawdi – Dhamankar Naka is about 95% complete; signalling, electrification, trials and safety checks are next.
• Kasheli creek: the 550 m creek bridge between Thane and Bhiwandi was completed in January 2023.
• Revised plan: on 29 August 2026 the Centre approved a revised alignment for Line 5 and the new Line 5A, taking the network to about 34 km with an underground section at Bhiwandi.
• Depot: Kasheli depot contract awarded in 2023.
• Target: Phase 1 around December 2026; Bhiwandi – Kalyan – Ulhasnagar around 2030–31.

The original Line 5 plan was a 24.9 km corridor ending at Kalyan APMC. The revised network approved in August 2026 runs about 34 km: Line 5 continues from Bhiwandi through Temghar, Rajnouli, Govegaon and Kongaon to Durgadi, and Line 5A runs from Durgadi via Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi and Kalyan station to Ulhasnagar.

This later phase is targeted for about 2030–31 and is estimated, with Line 5A, at ₹18,130.55 crore.

About Metro Line 5

Why Line 5 matters

Bhiwandi has no suburban rail link to Thane or Mumbai, and the Thane – Bhiwandi road is one of the most congested in the region. Line 5 gives Bhiwandi its first metro, and later connects it to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar on the Central Railway.

Yes, in a later phase. The revised plan approved by the Centre in August 2026 continues the line from Bhiwandi (with a short underground section) to Durgadi in Kalyan, and Line 5A runs on via Kalyan station to Ulhasnagar. This extended network is targeted for 2030–31.

Near Bhiwandi the elevated route clashed with the Bhiwandi bypass flyover, so the revised alignment takes a short stretch underground.
