About Metro Line 2B

Route explained: the three sections

Western: D.N. Nagar – Saraswat Nagar

Runs largely along S.V. Road through ESIC Nagar, Prem Nagar, Indira Nagar, Nanavati Hospital, Khira Nagar and Saraswat Nagar, serving Juhu, Vile Parle, Santacruz and Khar. Part of this stretch near Vile Parle lies close to the airport flight path, which affected the viaduct design.

Central: Saraswat Nagar – Diamond Garden

Via National College and Bandra into BKC (Income Tax Office, IL&FS, MTNL), then S.G. Barve Marg, Kurla East and the Eastern Express Highway to Chembur. The most complex stretch, with the longest delays.

Eastern: Chembur – Mandale (open)

Chembur, Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd and Mandale — serving Chembur, Deonar, Govandi and Mankhurd.

Why Line 2B matters

Mumbai’s rail network mostly runs north–south, so east–west trips like Bandra to Chembur depend on congested roads. When complete, Line 2B is expected to cut travel time on this corridor by 50–75%, give direct metro access to BKC from both suburbs, and connect Line 1, 2A, 3 and 4, the Monorail, and the Western and Harbour railway lines.

Early ridership on the standalone Mandale – Diamond Garden stretch was low, which is why MMRDA fast-tracked Chembur station to link the line with local trains and the Monorail.

Mandale depot & trains

The Mandale depot covers about 30 hectares on two levels and can hold up to 72 trains — one of the largest metro depots in the country. Line 2B uses six-coach, India-built BEML trains with regenerative braking, CCTV, mobile charging points and space for bicycles.

Construction history & delays

Line 2 was originally one Dahisar – Bandra – Mankhurd corridor, later split into Line 2A and Line 2B. The state cabinet approved Line 2B in 2016 at ₹10,986 crore and work began in 2018. Several civil packages were re-tendered more than once; the western package went to J Kumar Infraprojects and the MTNL – Chembur package to NCC in 2023. Two proposed stations — MMRDA Office and Kurla Terminus — were dropped. These delays pushed the original 2022 target back by several years.
