Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday inaugurated the reconstructed Carnac Bridge, now renamed as the Sindoor Flyover. The name “Sindoor” is a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of India’s armed forces during Operation Sindoor.

Why was Bridge’s name changed to Sindoor?

The 150-year-old Carnac Bridge was named after James Rivett-Carnac, a British governor. Many people believe that these historical names serve as a reminder of a time when Indians were exploited and treated unfairly, especially in light of the complicated history of colonial control. The Bridge’s renaming as Sindoor honours our sense of national pride in addition to changing the narrative away from colonial remembrance.

According to Fadnavis, it symbolizes the sacrifice of the armed forces, representing both the red Sindoor that adorns married women and the blood of soldiers who lay down their lives for the country. โ€œSindoor is not just a bridgeโ€”it is a sentiment,โ€ he said at the event.

All About Sindoor Bridge and Its Location:

Following an audit by BMC of the 150-year-old Carnac bridge, it was declared unsafe for use and required renovation. By November 2022, BMC had completely demolished the Bridge and approved the reconstruction of the new Bridge.

The Bridge connects the eastern and western parts of South Mumbai, near Masjid Bunder Railway Station, which connects PD Mello Road.

The Bridge spans a total length of 328 metres, including 70 metres across the railway track area and 230 metres of approach roads, of which 100 metres on the west and 130 metres on the east.

The reconstructed Bridge has cleared all tests, including load testing. All required clearance certificates have been obtained from various authorities, including safety clearance, structural stability certification, and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from railway authorities.

A Bridge of Relief for Local Residents:

Residents of nearby areas have expressed a sigh of relief after the inauguration of the Bridge. The Bridge will cut travel time by 20-30 minutes during rush hour. ย The Bridge is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion at key intersections, such as Walchand Hirachand Marg and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road, thereby improving east-west connectivity in South Mumbai.
