The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminal (CSMT) in Mumbai is slated for a Rs 1800 crore makeover, with the contract expected to be granted in mid-March. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) is in charge of the renovation project, which intends to decongest the terminus’s southern historic node whilst also expanding amenities and increasing multi-modal connectivity. Who’s in the Race?
Among the bidders are L&T, Tata Projects Ltd., NCC Ltd., J.K. Infra Projects Ltd., ITD Cementation, Ahluwalia Contractors, Dineshchandra R. Agrawal Infracon Pvt. Ltd., Creative Group LLP, and Assystem STUP. Unlike the PPP-DBFOT model, the project employs an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model.
The Project Plan
Since Railways opted not to follow the prior PPP-DBFOT strategy, the work is being carried out under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. The reconstruction of the CSMT, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is intended to provide additional room in the city’s limited area, improve multi-modal connectivity, and conserve and restore the famous edifice to its former splendour. The plan also includes a large Roof Plaza, a food court, a waiting lounge, a children’s playroom, a specialised place for local goods, and other amenities.
Why is Redevelopment Needed?
CSMT is one of the busiest railway stations in the country, with 16-17 lakh people passing through each day. The station reconstruction project intends to create a ‘City Centre’-style facility for both railway commuters and the general public. It will also connect both sides of the city with train stations, use green construction technologies, and provide services for the disabled.
The Economic Impact
The rehabilitation of railway stations around the nation, according to the Railways, would have a multiplier impact on the economy, with more job generation and enhanced economic growth. Apart from CSMT, New Delhi Station and Ahmedabad Station are also expected to be renovated, with multi-crore contracts issued.
