In a recent development, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has encountered a setback in the construction of Metro Line 12. The cancellation of the initial tender proposal has prompted the authorities to devise revised plans that aim to enhance connectivity and address commuter needs in the extended suburbs of Mumbai.
Setback: Cancellation of Tender Proposal
The MMRDA’s decision to cancel the tender proposal for Metro Line 12 follows the realization that the previous alignment did not adequately connect with the upcoming Navi Mumbai Metro 1. This essential transportation link prompted a strategic shift to ensure a seamless connection between the two metro lines, facilitating convenient transfers for passengers.
To rectify the connectivity issues, the revised plans for Metro Line 12 include extending the line beyond Taloja to Pendhar. This extension is intended to improve accessibility and cater to the growing population in the extended suburbs. The new bid will also focus on integrating Metro Line 12 with the Navi Mumbai Metro 1, ensuring hassle-free interchange at suitable stations for commuters.
Improved Commuting
Metro Line 12 was initially proposed to establish a robust public transportation network in the extended suburbs. With the revised plans, it will now serve as an extension of the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5, also known as the Orange Line. By integrating Metro Line 12 with Lines 4 and 4A (Wadala-Ghatkopar-Kasarvadavali-Gaimukh lines), passengers from the eastern suburbs will enjoy seamless travel, changing lines at two stations to reach Taloja effortlessly.
Reduced Reliance on Roads
The cancellation of the previous tender proposal may result in a delay in the project’s completion. Nevertheless, the revised plans aim to overcome construction challenges, including the rehabilitation of structures in congested areas. Once Metro Line 12 becomes operational, it will bring about a substantial improvement in the transportation choices available to the residents of Kalyan-Dombivali and Taloja, enhancing their commuting experience. Commuters will experience reduced reliance on road travel and enjoy a faster and more efficient mode of commuting.
Estimated Expenditure and Proposed Stations
The project’s estimated cost is Rs 1,521.80 crore, and it will comprise 17 stations along the route. Key stations include Ganesh Nagar, Pisavali Gaon, Golavali, Dombivali MIDC, Sagaon, Manpada, Sonarpada, Hedutane, Kolegaon, Nilje Gaon, Vadavali, Bale, Waklan, Turbhe, Pisarve Depot, Pisarve, and Taloja. These strategically chosen stations aim to cater to the commuting needs of residents and enhance connectivity with existing and future metro lines in the region.
Although the cancellation of the tender proposal for Metro Line 12 has caused a setback, the revised plans demonstrate the MMRDA’s commitment to providing improved connectivity and efficient public transportation for Mumbai’s extended suburbs.
